SFP optical module products are the late appearance of the optical module, but is also the current most widely used optical module products.

SFP Optical Module Concept

SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggables) is understood by many as an upgraded version of GBIC, which reduces the volume of SFP module by at least half compared with GBIC module, and can be configured with more than double the number of ports on the same panel. Since SFP modules are basically the same as GBICs in terms of functionality, they are also referred to as miniaturized GBICs (Mini-GBICs) by some switch vendors.

Development of SFP Optical Modules

GBIC and SFF in the development of optical modules have had a very remarkable history, with the rapid development of the network, they are gradually replaced by SFP optical modules.

SFP optical module is more SFF and GBIC optical module development, because SFF and GBIC is 1X9 optical module after the development of the two directions of the product, have their own advantages: miniaturization and hot swappable.


SFP optical module inherits the hot-swappable feature of GBIC, and also draws on the advantages of miniaturization of SFF. Adopting LC header, its volume is only 1/2 to 1/3 of GBIC module, which greatly increases the port density of network equipment and adapts to the trend of rapid development of the network, so it has been most widely used, and at present, the major equipment vendors, without exception, abandon GBIC products and only use SFP optical module products. Due to the adoption of a unified standard, the SFP products of various manufacturers can be compatible, SFP products can be purchased as a separate network equipment.


Although many higher technology, newer optical module products have emerged, SFP optical modules will continue to exist for a long time. After SFP, the development of optical modules is mainly toward the development of higher speed rates, and now there are 10G, 40G, 100G and other optical modules. Among them, SFP+ optical module is believed to be the generation of products that will be widely used after SFP.
