BIDI-SFP Optical Module Wiki
Knowledge Base + 2024.01.16

BIDI-SFP Optical Module: BiDi (Bidirectional) that is: single fiber bidirectional. It is the use of WDM (i.e., wavelength division multiplexing) technology, send and receive different central wavelengths in two directions, thus realizing a fiber bi-directional transmission of optical signals.

General optical modules have TX transmitter port and RX receiver port and other two ports, while the BIDI optical module has only one port, through the filter in the optical module for filtering, and at the same time to complete the 1310nm optical signal transmission and 1550nm optical signal reception, or vice versa. Therefore, BIDI modules must be used in pairs. The biggest advantage of BIDI optical modules is to save fiber resources and make two transmission fibers into one.

What is a BIDI SFP module?

The BIDI module is a bi-directional WDM (wavelength-division multiplexing) optical module that enables simultaneous bi-directional transmission in the optical channel over a single optical fiber.The BIDI module has only one port and transmits and receives signals over a single fiber optic cable through an integrated bi-directional coupler. Therefore, it must be used in pairs.

How BIDI Optical Modules Work

In order to work efficiently, BIDI modules must be used in pairs to transmit data in both directions by tuning the duplexer to match the desired wavelengths of the transmitter and receiver.

BIDI Optical Module Rate

BIDI Optical Modules are available in rates from 155Mbps to 3.125Gbps.

Advantages of BIDI Optical Modules

The most obvious advantage of using BIDI optical modules, such as: SFP + BIDI and SFP BIDI optical modules, is to reduce the cost of fiber optic cabling infrastructure. BIDI optical modules reduce the number of ports on the fiber optic patch panels, as well as reducing the space occupied by trays dedicated to fiber optic management, and reducing the number of fiber optic cables to be used.

General SFP Optical Module Introduction

SFP optical module is a SFP package of hot-swappable small package module, the current maximum rate of up to 10.3G, the interface is LC, and consists of lasers (including the transmitter TOSA and the receiver ROSA) and the circuit board IC and external accessories, external accessories are housing, chassis, PCBA, pull the ring, snap, unlocking parts, rubber plugs composed of.

SFP optical module classification

① according to the rate: 155M / 622M / 1.25G / 1.25G / 4.25G / 8G / 10G, of which 155M and 1.25G market more;

② in accordance with the wavelength: 850nm/1310nm/1550nm/1490nm/1530nm/1610nm, the wavelength is 850nm for SFP multi-mode, transmission distance in the 2KM below, the wavelength is 1310/1550nm for single-mode, transmission distance in the 2KM or more, the price of these three wavelengths is relatively cheaper than the other wavelengths;

(iii) According to the distance: short distance, medium distance, long distance;

④ according to the transmission mode: electric port, single-mode, multi-mode;

⑤ Special types of SFP optical modules include: BIDI-SFP, electrical port SFP, CWDM SFP, DWDM SFP, SFP+ optical modules and so on.

The difference between SFP and BIDI SFP

As we all know, a common SFP module usually has two ports, one is TX port for transmitting signals and the other is RX port for receiving signals. Unlike common SFP modules, BiDi SFP modules have only one port and use an integral WDM coupler on a single fiber to transmit and receive signals.
