Difference between SFP and SFP+ for Beginners
Knowledge Base + 2023.12.04

Many people are not clear about the difference between sfp and sfp+, so sometimes it brings unnecessary trouble. 10G module has gone through the development from 300Pin, XENPAK, X2, XFP, and finally realized the same size as SFP to transmit 10G signals, which is SFP+. SFP meets the demand of high density of optical modules by virtue of its miniaturization and low cost, and has replaced XFP to become the mainstream of 10G market in 2010 from 2002 when the standard was implemented.The SFP+ optical module has been implemented as a standard since 2002, and has replaced the XFP as the mainstream of the 10G market since 2010.

SFP+ optical module advantages:

1, SFP + has a more compact form factor than X2 and XFP package (the same size as the SFP);

2, and the same type of XFP, X2, XENPAK can be directly connected;

3, the cost is lower than XFP,X2,XENPAK products.

The difference between SFP+ and SFP:

1, SFP and SFP + appearance of the same size;

2, SFP protocol specification: IEEE802.3, SFF-8472;

The difference between SFP+ and XFP:

1, SFP + and XFP are 10G fiber optic modules, and other types of 10G modules can be interoperable;

2, SFP + than XFP appearance smaller size;

3, because of the smaller size SFP + signal modulation functions, serial / deserializer, MAC, clock and data recovery (CDR), as well as electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) function from the module to the motherboard card;

4. XFP-compliant protocol: XFP MSA protocol;

5, SFP + compliance protocol: IEEE 802.3ae, SFF-8431, SFF-8432;

6, SFP + is more mainstream design.

3. SFP+ protocol specification: IEEE 802.3ae, SFF-8431, SFF-8432.

Attachment:

Available optical SFP modules generally fall into the following categories: MMF (SX) at 850 nm wavelength/550 m distance, SMF (LX) at 1310 nm wavelength/10 km distance, XD at 1550 nm wavelength/40 km distance, ZX at 80 km distance, EX or EZX at 120 km distance, and DWDM.

About the X2 interface:

X2 is a specification in the form of a fiber optic transponder from 10.3 Gb/s for 10.5 Gb/s data rates to 10Gb/s fiber optic it is protocol specific:

10G Ethernet or 10G Fibre Channel version. X2 transponders are used in data communication over fiber optic links (telecom), they are smaller than the older generation of XENPAK transponders. Its electrical interface to the motherboard is also standardized and is called XAUI (4 x 3.125 Gb/s). WZT manufactures X2 300M, X210km, X220km, X240km, and X280km optical modules. All modules support the Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) feature.

DWDM X2: The Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) X2 pluggable modules allow enterprise companies and service providers to offer scalable and easy-to-deploy 10 Gigabit Ethernet services across their networks. Both the DWDM X2 ER 40km and DWDM X2 ZR80km are available for DWDM 10G Ethernet applications.
