100G QSFP28 CLR4 Optical Module Overview
Knowledge Base + 2024.01.25

The 100G optical module market is expanding rapidly as data transmission rates continue to evolve. In practice, the two optical module standards, 100G QSFP28 SR4 and 100G QSFP28 LR4, are far from being able to meet the needs of deploying data centers in the most cost-efficient way due to the various lengths of fiber links. Therefore, the 100G CLR4 Alliance has developed the 100G QSFP28 CLR4 standard.

The 100G QSFP28 CLR4 optical module adopts wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology, with a data rate of up to 26Gbps per channel, duplex LC interface, support for CDR (Clock Recovery Circuit), a maximum power consumption of less than 3.5W, a transmission distance of up to 2KM when paired with OS2 single-mode optical fiber, support for DDM digital monitoring and diagnostics, and compliance with commercial-grade operating temperature, and a four-channel full-duplex transceiver. It is a four-channel full-duplex transceiver module.

100G QSFP28 CLR4 optical module is an optical module for high-speed fiber optic communication with the following detailed features:

Data transmission rate: It supports 100Gbps data transmission rate, which makes it suitable for high-performance computing, data center interconnection and other applications requiring large bandwidth.

Package: QSFP28 package is a compact, high-density optical module package that integrates multiple optical channels in a small package, helping to increase the port density of the system.

Wavelength Range: CLR4 denotes the use of Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) technology, where "C" denotes coarse and "L" denotes wavelength. CLR4 modules use four different wavelength channels, each channel usually corresponds to one fiber.

Transmission Distance: Typically designed for fiber optic communications over short distances, such as connecting equipment in a data center. Transmission distances may range from a few tens to a hundred meters, depending on the network design and environmental conditions.

Optical Connection: CLR4 optical modules typically use LC fiber optic connectors, which are small, high-density connectors suitable for data centers and other scenarios that require high port density.

Multi-Channel Design: The CLR4 utilizes a multi-channel design where each channel has a separate wavelength. This design helps to transmit multiple independent data streams over the same fiber, improving fiber utilization.

Application Areas: 100G QSFP28 CLR4 optical modules are widely used in data centers, supercomputing, high-performance computing, and other areas requiring high-speed data transmission.

In summary, 100G QSFP28 CLR4 optical module is a fiber optic communication solution for high-speed data transmission, especially suitable for data centers and other scenarios, where high bandwidth and high-density connectivity are the key requirements, and the 100G QSFP28 CLR4 optical module makes up well for the shortcomings of CWDM4 in data center applications.
