What are the different types of 100G SFP?
Knowledge Base + 2024.01.11

There are several types of 100G SFP (Small Form-Factor Pluggable) transceivers, each designed for specific applications and requirements. The common types of 100G SFP modules include:

  1. 100GBASE-SR4 (Short Range):

    • This module is designed for short-range connections over multimode fiber. It uses four parallel fibers for both transmitting and receiving, with each lane operating at 25 Gbps.

  2. 100GBASE-LR4 (Long Range):

    • Designed for longer-range connections over single-mode fiber, the 100GBASE-LR4 module uses four parallel wavelengths, each operating at 25 Gbps. It supports distances of up to 10 kilometers.

  3. 100GBASE-ER4 (Extended Range):

    • Similar to LR4 but with an extended reach, the 100GBASE-ER4 module supports distances of up to 40 kilometers over single-mode fiber.

  4. 100GBASE-CWDM4 (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing):

    • This module utilizes CWDM technology, allowing for the transmission of four separate wavelengths over a single pair of single-mode fibers. Each wavelength operates at 25 Gbps, providing a total of 100 Gbps.

  5. 100GBASE-PSM4 (Parallel Single-Mode):

    • PSM4 uses four parallel single-mode fibers for both transmitting and receiving, with each lane operating at 25 Gbps. It's designed for connections over short distances on single-mode fiber.

  6. 100GBASE-SR10:

    • This module uses a 24-fiber MPO/MTP connector and is designed for short-range connections over multimode fiber, with each of the ten lanes operating at 10 Gbps.

  7. 100GBASE-LRL4 (Long Range Lite):

    • LRL4 is a cost-effective version of LR4 with reduced reach. It supports distances of up to 2 kilometers over single-mode fiber.

  8. 100GBASE-CR4 (Direct Attach Copper):

    • Designed for short-distance connections, this module uses copper twinaxial cables for direct attach applications. It is often used for connections within the same data center.

It's important to note that compatibility with specific networking equipment depends on the supported standards and interfaces. Always check the compatibility of the 100G SFP module with the devices and standards used in your network.
