Differences between SFP-10G-LRM and SFP-10G-LR Optical Modules
Knowledge Base + 2024.01.29

For sales professionals in the optical communication industry, as long as a customer provides a product model, they will know what product it corresponds to. Today, we will take Cisco optical modules as an example to learn about the SFP-10G-LRM optical module together.

What is the SFP-10G-LRM Optical Module?

The SFP-10G-LRM optical module complies with the 10GBase-LRM 10 Gigabit Ethernet specification, featuring low cost, low power consumption, and small form factor, making it widely used in practical applications.

10GBASE-LRM is a 10 Gigabit Ethernet specification in the IEEE 802.3aq standard, where "LRM" stands for "Long Reach Multimode," referring to the extension of length in multimode. SFP-10G-LRM optical modules compliant with this specification are mainly used for 220m short-distance local area network connections. There is also an upgraded version called SFP-10G-LRM2 optical module, which can be used for 2km short-distance local area network connections.

What are the Characteristics of the SFP-10G-LRM Optical Module?

1.Utilizes the existing 10G Ethernet serial LAN PHY encoding sub-layer.

2.Bit error rate does not exceed 10-12.

        3.Supports 62.5um multimode fiber: including 160/500MHz-km and 200/500MHz-km (OM1).

        4.Supports 50um multimode fiber: including 400/400MHz-km, 500/500MHz-km (OM2), and 1500/500MHz-km (OM3).

5.The minimum supported link on installed 500MHz.km multimode fiber is 220 meters, and on selected multimode fibers, the minimum supported link is 300 meters.

Differences between SFP-10G-LRM and SFP-10G-LR Optical Modules

1.The SFP-10G-LRM optical module can achieve a maximum transmission distance of 220m in multimode fibers with a wavelength of 1310nm, supporting the 10GBASE-LRM Ethernet standard, suitable for FDDI networks and 10G data communication.

2.The SFP-10G-LR optical module complies with the 10GBase-LR specification, with a maximum transmission distance of 10km on single-mode fibers with a wavelength of 1310nm, actually reaching up to 25km, characterized by small form factor, low power consumption, and long transmission distance.

The above is the relevant knowledge of the SFP-10G-LRM optical module, as well as the differences between it and the SFP-10G-LR optical module. The advantages of low cost and low power consumption provide great convenience for network systems, and their applications are also very extensive. The stability of these two optical modules provided by Walsun has been highly recognized by users. In addition, Walsun can also provide users with comprehensive network system solutions to help users build low-cost, high-efficiency, and easy-to-maintain network systems.
